Luke recovers from his wounds at a Simonite village. Zeb helps an old friend whose son is kidnapped by Indians. Bounty hunter Grey eagerly awaits Luke and Zeb's return to the ranch.
Luke, a deserter from the US Army, is pursued by a bounty hunter. Zeb wants to keep moving to Oregon but Kate refuses to leave without Luke despite the fact that their farm is right between two rivaling Indian tribes.
As the white drag across the West will also increase tensions with the Indians. Zeb Macahan Colonel Caine leads to an Arapaho village, in the belief that Caine should negotiate with the Indians. When Caine explains that the soldiers will attack the village Zeb doing what he can to prevent the massacre.
Zeb Macahan returns to the family farm in Virginia just in time to lead his family west to escape the Civil War. However, as they begin this perilous journey, they find that escaping the war is not as easy as they thought.
